How should I take gabapentin (Neurontin)?

Take gabapentin as directed by your physician and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with a full glass of water three times a day. You can take gabapentin with or without food.

The extended-release gabapentin tablet (Horizant) is taken with food at around 5 pm every day to relieve restless legs symptoms. Do not substitute the extended-release tablets for other formulations. Swallow the extended-release tablet whole and do not cut, crush, or chew the extended-release tablets.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct gabapentin dosage and frequency. Take your medication regularly at around the same times every day. No more than 12 hours should pass between gabapentin doses. Do not take more gabapentin or take it more frequently than prescribed. Gabapentin may help to control your symptoms but will not cure your condition. Do not stop the medication without talking to your doctor first.

Gabapentin may be given to children 3 years of age and older to treat certain types of seizures. Talk to your pediatrician regarding special care and precautions while using this medication in your child.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of gabapentin, take the medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose of gabapentin to make up for the missed dose.

Storage: Store gabapentin capsules, tablets, and extended-release tablets at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Store gabapentin oral solution in the refrigerator. Keep all prescription drugs out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unused gabapentin after the expiration date. Learn more about proper medication disposal
