Gabapentin (Neurontin) tips from pharmacists

  • This medication can make you drowsy or dizzy. See how it affects you before doing activities that require focus and concentration, such as driving.

  • If you want to stop taking gabapentin, please talk to your doctor about gradually reducing the dose. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause serious withdrawal effects.

  • Take antacids such as Mylanta and Maalox at least 2 hours before you take your gabapentin. The antacids can reduce gabapentin absorption and lower its effectiveness.

  • If you take gabapentin for post-herpetic neuralgia, you might get pain relief as quickly as 2 days after starting the medication. However, it can take around 2 months to get the full benefit.
