How To Use Gemfibrozil

Gemfibrozil is available as an oral 600-mg tablet to take by mouth twice a day, 30 minutes before the morning and evening meals.

Read the prescription label carefully and take gemfibrozil exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take a higher or lower dose of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than prescribed.

Follow your doctor’s instructions on a proper diet (low-fat, low-cholesterol diet) and exercise recommendations along with gemfibrozil therapy.

Take your medication regularly. High serum triglyceride levels do not cause any specific symptoms and can only be detected with a blood test. Gemfibrozil will help to control high triglyceride blood levels, high LDL levels, and low HDL cholesterol levels, but will not cure your condition. Continue taking gemfibrozil even if you feel well. Talk to your doctor before you discontinue gemfibrozil. Risk of coronary heart disease can increase if your plasma triglyceride levels are not controlled.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of gemfibrozil, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses together to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store gemfibrozil at controlled room temperature (between 20-25° C or 68-77° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired gemfibrozil should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw gemfibrozil in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded gemfibrozil is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
