What is warfarin sodium (Coumadin)?

Warfarin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner); it works by decreasing blood's ability to clot. Warfarin is used to prevent the formation of blood clots such as venous thrombosis (a blood clot in the vein) and pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in the lung).

There may be other uses of warfarin—your pharmacist or physician can give you further information and assistance.

Who can take warfarin (Coumadin)?

Adults and children can take warfarin; though, the use of warfarin in children is very complex. If your child is on warfarin therapy, close monitoring by a pediatrician or specialist is necessary.
