How To Use Docusate (Colace)

Docusate is available as a capsule, tablet, liquid, and syrup to take by mouth and as an enema given rectally. This medication is usually taken at bedtime. Follow the directions on the package or your prescription label properly, and ask your health professional to discuss anything you do not understand.

Do not use more docusate or use it more frequently or for a longer time than indicated on the package instructions or advised by your doctor.

Swallow the docusate capsules whole. Do not chew, split, or crush them. Make sure to take capsules or tablets with a full glass of water. Measure liquid docusate carefully. Use the dosing syringe provided or dose-measuring device -- not a kitchen spoon. You can take help from your pharmacist to understand how to use it if you have any difficulty. Combine the liquid (not the syrup) with 4 ounces or 120 milliliters of milk, fruit juice, or formula to mask its bitter flavor. Do not store for later use. Drink the mixture immediately.

Discuss with your doctor regarding the use of docusate in children. While this medication may be used for children as young as 2 years in selected cases, precautions do apply.

While using docusate, be sure to drink plenty of liquids. It often takes this medication one to three days of regular use to start working.

The rectal form of docusate is for use only in the rectum. Do not take the rectal enema by mouth.

Both before and after using the enema, wash your hands. Lay on your left side with your left leg extended and your right leg slightly bent to administer the enema. The applicator tip should be gently inserted into your rectum after the cap has been removed. Squeeze the bottle slowly to release the liquid into your rectum. Lay on your left side for at least 30 minutes after using the enema to give the liquid time to circulate throughout your intestines. Try to avoid bathroom use and keep the enema in for at least an hour or all night if you can.

Follow the directions on the package insert carefully and use docusate exactly as directed. This medication can be habit-forming.

Missed dose: Docusate is usually taken as needed. In case of a missed dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses of docusate together.

Storage: Store docusate at room temperature (between 15-30 C° or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct sunlight in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused docusate. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through your local waste disposal company or a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
