How To Use Ferrous Sulfate (FEOSOL)

Ferrous sulfate comes in the form of a tablet or liquid solution to take by mouth once a day. Take one tablet daily after meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Try to take your iron supplement at around the same time every day.

Read the package label carefully and take the recommended iron supplement exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of this medicine or take it more or less frequently than advised by your doctor. 

If you are using film-coated tablets or extended release iron tablets, do not split, chew, or crush them. Use a medication dropper to measure the dose of the liquid form of ferrous sulfate.

Remember that many over-the-counter iron containing products are available. Iron is also present in fixed combinations with certain medications. Make sure you do not take multiple products containing ferrous sulfate.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of your ferrous sulfate iron supplement, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take extra ferrous sulfate to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store ferrous sulfate at room temperature between 15-30° C or 59-86° F, away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in bathroom cabinets where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach from children and pets.

Unused medicine: Dispose unused ferrous sulfate in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw ferrous sulfate in the trash or toilet. The safest way to dispose of expired or unneeded ferrous sulfate is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
