How To Use Hydroquinone (Blanche)

Hydroquinone comes as a 4% cream. Apply a thin layer to the affected area and rub it in gently. Use the medicine once daily at night approximately 30 minutes before bedtime or as directed by your dermatologist. Make sure you practice sun avoidance, use sunscreen, and wear protective clothing.

Studies have shown that maximum results are obtained when hydroquinone is used in combination with a steroid and a retinoid. This combination of active ingredients is present in the brand name cream Tri-Luma.

Using hydroquinone may result in an improvement in melasma but it will not cure the condition. Use this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare professional. Do not use more of the cream or use it for longer than prescribed.

Missed dose: If you miss an application of hydroquinone, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra hydroquinone to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store hydroquinone at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container. You can refrigerate this medicine (between 36-46° F) but you should not freeze it. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused hydroquinone should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw hydroquinone in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
