How should I take Cymbalta (duloxetine)?

Take Cymbalta as directed by your doctor and/or pharmacist. This medicine is to be taken orally (by mouth) with water, once or twice a day, with or without food. Cymbalta comes in the form of a delayed-release capsule (the medication is released in the intestines to protect it from stomach acids). Do not chew, crush, or split the capsule. Also, do not open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on food or mix it with liquids.

Take Cymbalta at around the same time every day. Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct dosage and frequency. Do not take more Cymbalta or take it more frequently than prescribed. 

It can take up to 4 weeks for you to get the full benefit of this medication. Cymbalta will help to control your symptoms, but it will not treat the underlying cause. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel better. Do not stop taking Cymbalta without talking to your doctor first. Suddenly stopping this medication can lead to unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, tiredness, burning, pain, numbness and tingling in the hands and feet, anxiety, irritability, problems with sleeping, and nightmares. If you want to come off his medication, your doctor will likely reduce the dose gradually.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Cymbalta, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next capsule, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take two Cymbalta doses to make up for a missed dose

Storage: Store Cymbalta at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all prescription medications out of reach of children and pets.
