How To Use Dorzolamide-Timolol (Cosopt)
Dorzolamide-timolol is a prescription eye drop solution that is applied to the affected eye(s) twice daily. Read the prescription label carefully and use dorzolamide-timolol exactly as your doctor prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency of the medication prescribed unless your doctor tells you to.
If you are using other eye drops, make sure you administer them at least 10 minutes apart.
The combination of dorzolamide and timolol can help to control your eye condition but will not cure it. Continue using the medicine even if you are symptom-free. Check with your doctor before stopping the use of dorzolamide-timolol.
Before applying dorzolamide-timolol and other ophthalmic solutions, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If you are wearing soft contact lenses, remove them before applying the medicine. Do not touch the dropper tip to your eye or any other surface. Tilt your head back slightly and pull the lower eyelid down with your index finger to create a small pocket. Squeeze one drop of the medicine into this pocket, gently close your eye, and apply light pressure on the area. Tilt your head down for a couple of minutes. Wipe excess fluid with a tissue. Replace the dropper in the bottle. Do not rinse or wipe the dropper. Wash your hands after using the medicine to remove any residual liquid. Allow at least 10 minutes before using other eye drops.
Missed dose: If you forget a dose of dorzolamide-timolol, instill it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and instill the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store dorzolamide-timolol at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets. You can use any unused single-use containers of Cosopt PF and multi-dose containers of Cosopt until the expiry date.
Unused medicine: Unused or expired dorzolamide-timolol should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw dorzolamide-timolol in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded dorzolamide-timolol is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
