Jardiance (empagliflozin) Side Effects
Jardiance (empagliflozin) can cause changes in blood sugar levels, including dangerously low blood sugar. Learn the signs and symptoms of high and low blood sugar and talk to your doctor about what to do if this occurs.
Some of the common side effects of empagliflozin are listed below. Tell your doctor if these adverse effects are severe or do not go away after a few days.
- Increased thirst
- Increased urination
- Dizziness or lightheadedness when rising from a sitting or lying position
Jardiance (empagliflozin) can also cause very serious side effects. Call your doctor right away if you experience symptoms such as:
- Pain, burning, frequency, or urgency with urination; pink, red, brown, or cloudy urine; back pain or pelvic pain (symptoms of urinary tract infections)
- In women, vaginal odor, vaginal itching, or whitish/yellowish vaginal discharge that looks like cottage cheese (signs and symptoms of yeast infections)
- In men, pain, redness, swelling, itching, rash on the penis, or foul-smelling discharge from the penis
- Flu-like symptoms
- Weakness, tiredness, and fever
- Pain, tenderness, redness, and swelling of the genitals or rectum
Stop taking Jardiance (empagliflozin) and seek emergency medical care if you experience the following signs and symptoms of serious allergic reactions:
- Rash, hives, itching
- Trouble swallowing or breathing
- Hoarseness
- Swelling of the throat, tongue, lips, eyes, or face
Talk to your doctor about what to do in case of low or high blood sugar — your doctor may recommend a diabetes education program you can attend. This will help you recognize the signs and symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis. If these symptoms occur, you must stop taking Jardiance (empagliflozin) and call your doctor without delay or seek medical attention immediately. You should check for ketones in your urine even if your blood sugar is below 250 mg/dL. Symptoms of diabetic ketoacidosis may include:
- Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain
- Tiredness
- Trouble breathing

Jardiance (empagliflozin) Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, call your doctor, the local poison control center, or the provincial poison control center immediately. If the person can’t be awakened, has had a seizure, or has trouble breathing, call 911.
