What are lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril) side effects?

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as swelling of lips, tongue, throat or face, hives, and shortness of breath. Black patients have an increased risk of having allergic reactions to lisinopril, or ACE inhibitors in general. 

One of the most common side effects of lisinopril is a persistent, dry cough. Other common side effects of lisinopril include:

• dizziness

• headache

• Nausea, vomiting 

• Fatigue

• Skin rash 

These lisinopril side effects do not usually require medical attention; however, you should report them to your doctor if they persist.

Below are the serious side effects of lisinopril. You should inform your doctor without delay about the following side effects:

• Allergic reactions as mentioned above 
• Changes in urination or problems with passing urine—these could be signs of kidney injury.
• Muscle weakness; fast, irregular heartbeat; chest pain—these could be symptoms of increased potassium (hyperkalemia).
• Flu-like symptoms, feeling tired, weakness; brown or dark yellow urine; pale-colored stools; nausea; poor appetite; upper stomach pain; yellowing of skin or eyes; feeling tired or weak—these are potential signs of liver injury.
• Dizziness; feeling lightheaded or faint, falls; feeling weak or tired—these are signs of low blood pressure, especially if it is combined with a diuretic (water pill), or other blood pressure-lowering agents.
