How should I take Macrobid (nitrofurantoin)?

Macrobid comes as a capsule or liquid to be taken by mouth. You should take Macrobid with food 2-4 times a day as directed by your physician. Take your medicine at around the same time every day. 

Read your prescription label carefully and follow the directions. Do not take more or less of this medication or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. 

If you are taking the suspension (liquid), shake the bottle well before use. Measure the dose with a dose-measuring cup or spoon, not a regular household spoon.

Continue taking Macrobid and finish all the medication your healthcare provider gives, even if you start to feel well after a few days of treatment. Contact your doctor if your symptoms do not improve or are getting worse during Macrobid treatment.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of Macrobid, take your medicine as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not take two doses simultaneously to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Macrobid at controlled room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all non-prescription and prescription medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused Macrobid should be disposed of so that children, pets, and others cannot get to it. Do not flush unneeded or expired Macrobid down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medications is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
