What are Macrobid (nitrofurantoin) side effects?
Common side effects of Macrobid are listed below. Tell your doctor if these side effects are severe or if they do not go away over time.
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Heartburn
- Gas
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Hair loss
Some of the potential adverse effects of Macrobid are more serious and require immediate medical attention. Call your doctor right away if you have the following symptoms:
- Rash, hives, itching, or other signs of an allergic reaction
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Chest pain
- Persistent cough
- Swelling of the eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
- Fever, chills, muscle weakness
- Numbness, tingling, pinprick sensations in the fingers or toes
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, right upper abdominal pain, loss of appetite, dark urine
- Confusion
- Dizziness
- Severe diarrhea (bloody or watery stools) with or without fever and stomach cramps
- Vision changes, eye pain

Macrobid Overdose: In case of a known or suspected overdose, immediately call your doctor or pharmacist. You can also call your provincial poison control center or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If a person has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or cannot be awakened, call 911 immediately.
