What is Lexapro (escitalopram)?

Lexapro (lek suh proh) belongs to a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is a prescription oral medication that is used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. There may be other uses of this medication. Your healthcare provider can give you further Lexapro drug information.

Who can take Lexapro (escitalopram)?

Lexapro is used in adults and adolescents over 12 years of age.

Is Lexapro safe for my child?

Lexapro is not typically prescribed to children under the age of 12 years. A small number of children, teenagers, and young adults under 24 years who take antidepressant medications or mood elevators like Lexapro can become suicidal. This might include thoughts about harming or killing themselves or planning or trying to do so. Parents and family members should be aware that there can be mental health changes during Lexapro treatment, especially when treatment is first started or the dose of escitalopram is increased. Please call your healthcare professionals right away if you or your child experiences symptoms such as new or worsening depression, suicidal thoughts, agitation, aggression, irritability, restlessness, panic attacks, extreme anxiety, or sleep problems. Caregivers should be vigilant for these symptoms if a person cannot seek medical help on their own.
