Lexapro is a prescription medication that is used to treat major depression. This is a mental health condition associated with persistent feelings of sadness that affect how you think, feel, and behave. Lexapro is also used to treat generalized anxiety disorder. This condition is associated with excessive worry and tension lasting 6 months or longer.

How does Lexapro (escitalopram) work?

Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the central nervous system that plays an important role in regulating mood. Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor or SSRI. It prevents the reuptake (absorption) of serotonin by brain cells. Meaning, more of this mood-boosting chemical becomes available. This improves feelings of well-being in people with depression and anxiety.

What are Lexapro (escitalopram) doses?

Lexapro is available as 5 mg, 10 mg, and 20 mg tablets and a 5mg/5mL oral solution. The usual dose of Lexapro is 10 mg once a day. Your doctor may start you on a low dose of Lexapro and increase the dose after one week.
