Altreno Uses

Altreno is used to treat acne, a common skin condition in which comedones (bumps called blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples) form due to clogged skin pores.

Tretinoin, the active ingredient in Altreno, is also used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and rough skin texture. This tretinoin formulation is sold under the brand names Renova and Refissa for this purpose.

There may be other uses of Altreno—your pharmacist or healthcare provider can give you further drug information.

Altreno Mechanism of Action

Altreno (topical tretinoin) decreases the cohesiveness (clumping together) of dead skin cells. In addition, tretinoin stimulates mitotic activity (increases the turnover of skin cells). Research suggests this medicine binds to specific retinoic acid receptors and helps to unclog pores and reduce the formation of comedones (pimples).

Altreno Doses

Altreno (tretinoin) acne treatment comes in a 0.05% water-based lotion formulation. This pale yellow topical lotion should be applied to the affected areas of the skin once daily at bedtime.

Other dosage forms of tretinoin, such as a tretinoin gel formulation (Avita, Atralin, Retin-A) and tretinoin cream (Avita, Refissa, Renova, Retin-A) are also available.

Oral tretinoin is used to treat severe nodular acne vulgaris and certain types of cancers.
