Amlodipine-Benazepril (Lotrel) Pros and Cons

Both amlodipine and benazepril are first choice medications for the treatment of hypertension.
This combination works well in people who have not responded to monotherapy (either medication alone).
It is convenient to take amlodipine-benazepril combination because you need to take fewer pills.
Amlodipine-benazepril is available in a low-cost generic version.

Amlodipine-benazepril is prescribed only after you have tried and failed to respond to at least one of these medications alone.
The combination of amlodipine-benazepril comes in fixed doses, so dose adjustments are more challenging if one medication is not working as well as the other.
Amlodipine-benazepril is not safe for use during pregnancy and can cause birth defects, especially if used during the second or third trimester.
Benazepril can cause ACE inhibitor induced cough and throat irritation in some people.
