Uses
Amlodipine Valsartan (Exforge) Uses
Amlodipine valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It is used when monotherapy (one medicine alone) has not been able to lower blood pressure. It may be used as the initial therapy for hypertension if your healthcare provider feels you will need two medicines to control your blood pressure.
Uncontrolled hypertension can damage many organs in the body and is a major risk factor for heart disease, heart attack, stroke, cardiovascular death, and kidney failure.
There may be other uses of amlodipine valsartan—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.
Amlodipine Valsartan (Exforge) Mechanism of Action
Amlodipine acts on the heart and blood vessels. It relaxes the blood vessels and lowers blood pressure. It also increases blood and oxygen supply to the heart and reduces the workload of the heart.
Valsartan blocks the action of a natural substance in the body that causes tightening or narrowing of the blood vessels. It helps in lowering blood pressure by relaxing or widening blood vessels.
Amlodipine Valsartan (Exforge) Doses
Amlodipine valsartan is available in oral tablet form in the following fixed dosage forms:
● Amlodipine / valsartan: 5 mg / 160 mg
● Amlodipine / valsartan: 10 mg / 160 mg
● Amlodipine / valsartan: 5 mg / 320 mg
● Amlodipine / valsartan: 10 mg / 320 mg
Exforge (amlodipine valsartan) is usually dosed once daily. The recommended starting dose is 5/160 mg once daily. The dose can be adjusted every 1-2 weeks until blood pressure is adequately controlled. The maximum dose is one tablet of amlodipine and valsartan 10/320 mg daily.
Your healthcare provider may prescribe Exforge (amlodipine-valsartan) if your blood pressure is not controlled with amlodipine alone or valsartan alone. They may also prescribe Exforge if you have dose-limiting side effects on either medicine, with a lower dose of that component (amlodipine or valsartan) in the combination formulation. Doctors also prescribe Exforge for the sake of convenience to patients receiving amlodipine and valsartan separately. Sometimes, patients are given Exforge as initial therapy if the healthcare provider believes it is unlikely their blood pressure will be controlled with one antihypertensive drug.
