What should I tell my doctor before starting amoxicillin (Moxatag)?
Tell your health care professional about all your medical conditions—amoxicillin may not be not suitable for people with certain medical conditions, such as mononucleosis, kidney disease, and others. If you have an inherited condition called phenylketonuria, know that amoxicillin chewable tablets contain aspartame as a sweetener, forming phenylalanine in the body.
Give your doctor a list of all your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, vitamins, and herbal products. This can help avoid serious drug interactions.
Tell your doctor if you have previously had an allergic reaction to penicillin antibiotics, cephalosporin antibiotics, or any of the ingredients in amoxicillin tablets, capsules, or liquid suspension. Ask your pharmacy for a list of ingredients.
Amoxicillin is a pregnancy category B drug. This means it is considered safe to take while pregnant and breastfeeding. However, you should tell your doctor if you’re pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding. Also, tell your doctor if you become pregnant while on amoxicillin.
What precautions should I take while on amoxicillin (Moxatag)?
Keep all your doctors’ appointments while on treatment with amoxicillin. Your doctor may order some blood tests to assess your body’s response to the medicine.
Finish your prescription even if you feel better. Stopping amoxicillin without finishing the antibiotic course can lead to incomplete treatment of bacterial infections. It can also lead to the bacteria becoming resistant to antibiotics.
Call your doctor immediately if you experience any signs and symptoms such as rash, hives, itching, difficulty breathing, swelling, or severe diarrhea while taking or after finishing amoxicillin.
People with diabetes should use TesTape or Clinistix (and not Clinitest) to test the urine for sugar while on amoxicillin.
Your amoxicillin prescription will likely not be refillable. If your symptoms have not improved after finishing amoxicillin, call your doctor. Do not use someone else’s leftover medicine or share your prescription with anyone.
What drugs can interact with amoxicillin (Moxatag)?
Taking amoxicillin with some other medications can affect how well the medicines work. Drug interactions can also increase the risk of serious side effects. Your physician may choose a different antibiotic to treat your bacterial infection, change the dose or frequency of one or both medicines, or monitor you carefully for side effects if there are known drug interactions.
Caution is advised when using amoxicillin with the following medications:
- blood thinners
- oral contraceptives
- other antibiotics
- allopurinol
- probenecid
This list does not describe all possible amoxicillin interactions. Give your health care provider a complete list of your medications, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, dietary supplements, vitamins, and herbal products. Also tell your health care provider if you smoke, drink alcohol, or use illegal drugs because some of these substances can cause serious health complications when used with antibiotics or other prescription drugs.
