Uses

Atenolol Chlorthalidone (Tenoretic 50) Uses

Atenolol and chlorthalidone is a fixed dose combination drug that is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Hypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and other chronic health conditions. Lowering blood pressure lowers the risk of potentially life-threatening cardiovascular events.

The two blood pressure medicines, atenolol, and chlorthalidone, have an additive antihypertensive effect. Your doctor may prescribe this combination if one medication alone is not successful in controlling your high blood pressure.

There may be other uses of atenolol and chlorthalidone—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Atenolol Chlorthalidone (Tenoretic 50) Mechanism of Action

Atenolol is a beta-blocker. It lowers blood pressure by relaxing the blood vessels and making blood flow easier. Chlorthalidone is a diuretic (water pill). It helps the kidneys remove excess fluid and salt in urine.

Atenolol Chlorthalidone (Tenoretic 50) Doses

Atenolol and chlorthalidone fixed dose combination represents:

  • Atenolol 50 mg and chlorthalidone 25 mg (Tenoretic 50)
  • Atenolol 100 mg and chlorthalidone 25 mg (Tenoretic 100)

The usual recommended starting dose is one Tenoretic 50 tablet daily (atenolol 50 mg and chlorthalidone 25 mg daily). If blood pressure is not controlled on the usual initial dose, it can be increased to one Tenoretic 100 tablet daily (atenolol 100 mg and chlorthalidone 25 mg). The dose may need to be adjusted for people with impaired renal function (reduced kidney function).
