How To Use Atomoxetine

Atomoxetine comes in the form of a capsule to be taken by mouth 1-2 times a day (once daily in the morning or in two divided doses in the morning and late afternoon/early evening). Try to take your medication regularly at around the same time(s) every day. This makes it easier to remember and helps maintain stable plasma concentrations of the drug. 

You can take atomoxetine capsules with or without food. Make sure you swallow the capsule whole without biting, chewing, or cutting it. If a capsule breaks, discard the powder carefully. Avoid getting the powder into your eyes, as it can be irritating. Rinse your eyes with water if you accidentally touch your eyes.

Read the prescription label and follow the instructions carefully. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Your healthcare provider may start you on a lower dose of atomoxetine and increase the dose after 3 days and again after 2-4 weeks. You may notice an improvement in your ADHD symptoms after about a week, but it can take a month or so for you to get the full benefits of this medicine. Atomoxetine will help to control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder but will not cure the condition. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel well. Do not stop atomoxetine treatment without consulting your healthcare provider.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of atomoxetine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed one.

Storage: Store atomoxetine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused atomoxetine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw atomoxetine in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
