Atomoxetine Uses
Atomoxetine is the first non-stimulant medication that was FDA-approved for treating ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). ADHD is associated with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and a decreased ability to pay attention. Unlike other medications (stimulant medications) used to treat ADHD, atomoxetine is not a controlled substance. Atomoxetine is used as part of a total treatment program for ADHD, including behavior therapy, counseling, and medications.
There may be other uses of atomoxetine—your health system pharmacists or doctors can give you further drug information.
Atomoxetine Mechanism of Action
Atomoxetine increases the levels of norepinephrine in specific brain regions. Norepinephrine is a neurotransmitter that helps to control behavior.
Atomoxetine Doses
Atomoxetine is available in 10 mg, 18 mg, 25 mg, 40 mg, 60 mg, 80 mg, and 100 mg capsules.
The usual starting dose is 0.5 mg/kg/day in children and adolescents with a body weight up to 70 kg. This dose can be increased after at least 3 days to a target maintenance dose of 1.2 mg/kg/day. The maintenance dose may be taken as a single morning dose or in two divided doses (one in the morning and a second dose in the late afternoon/early evening). The maximum dose in children and adolescents is 1.4 mg/kg/day, not to exceed 100 mg per day. Children and adolescents with a body weight of more than 70 kg are given adult doses for treating ADHD.
The usual starting dose of atomoxetine in adult patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is 40 mg per day. This can be increased after at least 3 days to a dose of 80 mg per day, which may be taken either as a single morning dose or in two divided doses (morning and late afternoon/early evening). Further dose adjustment may be done after 2-4 more weeks. The dose can be increased to a maximum of 100 mg in people who did not respond to 80 mg daily. The maximum recommended dose in adults, children, and adolescents weighing over 70 kg is 100 mg daily.
