Azathioprine Tips from Pharmacists

  • Take azathioprine after meals to reduce nausea and vomiting.

  • This medicine increases your risk of infections. Wash your hands frequently and stay away from people who are sick during azathioprine therapy.

  • Azathioprine can increase your risk of developing skin cancer. Wear protective clothing, use sunblock, and avoid unnecessary exposure to UV radiation while on this medicine.

  • This medicine can cause serious birth defects. Both men and women should use birth control while on azathioprine to prevent pregnancy.

  • Some people with a deficiency of an enzyme called thiopurine methyltransferase (TPMT) may not metabolize azathioprine as well, leading to high levels of the drug in their body and an increased risk of side effects. Your doctor will tell you if you need to be tested for TPMT deficiency.
