How To Use Azelaic Acid (Finacea)

Apply a thin layer of azelaic acid topical (gel or cream) to the affected area twice a day, morning and evening. Apply azelaic acid foam to the whole face. Use the medication regularly as prescribed for the most benefit.

Read the prescription label carefully and use azelaic acid as directed. Do not use more of the medicine or use it more often than recommended.

Azelaic acid foam is an aerosol and is flammable. Store it away from a flame or heat source. Do not smoke immediately after applying the foam.

Here are the steps to use azelaic acid topical:

  1. Wash your skin with mild soap and water or use a soap-free cleansing lotion. Avoid harsh cleansers that contain alcohol, astringents, abrasives, or peeling agents. Your dermatologist can recommend appropriate cleansers for rosacea and acne.
  2. Pat dry with a soft towel.
  3. Shake the foam well before use.
  4. Apply a thin layer of the gel or cream to the affected areas or the foam to your entire face. Gently massage the medicine into your skin.
  5. Do not place any coverings, such as occlusive dressings, bandages, or wraps, on the treated skin.
  6. You may apply cosmetics or make-up over the medicine once it dries.
  7. Wash off any residual medicine on your hands with soap and water.

Missed dose: If you miss an application of azelaic acid, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose, and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store azelaic acid at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in the original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused and expired azelaic acid should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Discard any unused foam after 8 weeks. The foam is flammable. Do not discard it in an incinerator. Do not throw azelaic acid in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded azelaic acid is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
