Azelaic Acid (Finacea) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Use a mild soap or soap-free cleanser. Avoid harsh cleansers as they can make skin irritation caused by azelaic acid worse.

  • Shake the foam well before use. Discard any unused foam after 8 weeks.

  • Wait until the medicine is completely dry before applying any cosmetics or makeup.

  • Avoid rosacea triggers such as alcoholic beverages, spicy foods, and hot coffee and tea.

  • Avoid applying azelaic acid near your eyes or mouth. If the medicine gets into your eyes, wash it with lots of water. See an eye doctor if the eye irritation does not go away.

  • Tell your dermatologist if you don’t notice any improvement after 3 months of regular use of azelaic acid. They may recommend other treatment options for mild to moderate rosacea or acne.
