Azelaic Acid (Finacea) Uses
Azelaic acid gel and foam are used to treat inflammatory papules and pustules (bumps and pimples) in people with mild to moderate rosacea, a skin condition that causes facial flushing and pimples. Azelaic acid cream is used to treat inflammatory papules in people with mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
There may be other uses of azelaic acid—your doctor or pharmacist can give you further drug information.
Azelaic Acid (Finacea) Mechanism of Action
Azelaic acid works by decreasing swelling and redness associated with rosacea. It helps to control acne by killing bacteria and reducing keratin production in the skin.
Azelaic Acid (Finacea) Doses
Azelaic acid comes as a 15% gel (Finacea Gel), a 15% foam (Finacea Foam), and a 20% cream (Azelex Cream). The recommendation is to apply a thin layer of azelaic acid gel and cream on the affected area twice a day, morning and evening, or a thin layer of azelaic acid foam on the entire face, twice a day.
