How To Use Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide comes in the form of a cream, gel, lotion, cleansing solution, or cleansing bar that is typically applied 1-2 times a day on the affected areas where acne is present.

This medication can cause irritation of the skin. Start by applying it on a small area of skin for 3 days to see if it causes any discomfort or reaction. If you tolerate it well, then use it 1-2 times a day as prescribed by your provider or recommended on the package insert. Do not use more benzoyl peroxide or use it more often than directed.

If you are using the cleansing bar or solution, wash your face with it once or twice a day. If you are using the gel, cream, or lotion, apply a small amount to clean, dry skin in the affected area and rub it in gently.

Benzoyl peroxide is for external use only. Do not swallow benzoyl peroxide, and do not allow it to get into your eyes, nose, or mouth.

Avoid using harsh or abrasive skin products or cosmetics on your skin during benzoyl peroxide treatment. Also, avoid unnecessary exposure to sunlight or the use of sunlamps or tanning beds during acne therapy with benzoyl peroxide.

Do not apply dressings or bandages on the treated area unless your doctor tells you to. Avoid combining benzoyl peroxide with other creams, lotions, gels, or skin medications without checking with your provider first.

Do not use benzoyl peroxide-containing products on a child under 12 years of age without a doctor’s approval.

It can take 4-6 weeks for you to get optimal results after starting treatment with benzoyl peroxide. Tell your doctor if your acne does not improve after this time period.

Avoid contact with hair and colored fabrics because benzoyl peroxide can bleach them.

Missed dose: If you forget to apply benzoyl peroxide, apply it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed application and go back to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store benzoyl peroxide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused benzoyl peroxide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw benzoyl peroxide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded benzoyl peroxide is through a drug take-back program.
