Benzoyl Peroxide Side Effects

Possible side effects of benzoyl peroxide are listed below. Call your doctor for medical advice if they are severe or do not go away in a few days.

  • Skin dryness
  • Peeling
  • Warmth
  • Tingling
  • Stinging

Some of the adverse effects of benzoyl peroxide are more serious. Call your doctor right away or seek medical attention in the emergency room if you develop:

  • Redness, swelling, burning, or blistering at the application site
  • Allergic reaction (skin rash, hives, itching)
  • Swelling of the eyes, face, lips, tongue, or mouth
  • Throat tightness or swelling
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Feeling lightheaded or faint

The above list may not include all the potential side effects of benzoyl peroxide. Contact your healthcare provider if your side effects are unusual or severe or if they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Benzoyl peroxide Overdose: In case someone swallows benzoyl peroxide, call a doctor immediately. You can also call your local poison control center or the national poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. If someone has lost consciousness, collapsed, is not breathing, or has had a seizure, call 911.
