How To Use Benztropine Mesylate
Benztropine comes in the form of a tablet to take by mouth. It has a long duration of action and works well when it is taken as a single dose at bedtime. This makes it easier to turn over in bed and get out of bed in the morning. However, you can also take benztropine in 2-4 divided doses throughout the day, depending on your symptoms.
Read the prescription label carefully and take your medication regularly. Follow your doctor’s instructions closely and take the correct dose of benztropine exactly as prescribed. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose and increase the dose slowly. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval.
Do not stop treatment with other antiparkinsonian medications abruptly after starting benztropine. This can cause your symptoms to come back. Your doctor will tell you how to gradually reduce and/or discontinue your other Parkinson’s medications. You may get maximum relief with combination therapy, for example, with benztropine taken along with carbidopa-levodopa.
Missed dose: If you forget a dose of benztropine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store benztropine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused benztropine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw benztropine in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded benztropine is through a medicine take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
