Benztropine Mesylate Tips from Pharmacists

  • Tell your healthcare provider how you feel on benztropine. Your provider can adjust your dose based on your response and side effects.

  • Do not stop taking your other Parkinson’s medications suddenly after starting benztropine. The dose will need to be gradually decreased. You may need to continue taking other medications for maximum benefit.

  • Anticholinergic medications such as benztropine can cause severe dry mouth. This can increase your risk of cavities and gum problems. Make sure you get regular dental check ups while on this drug.

  • Drinking water, chewing on hard candy, and rinsing your mouth with an oral solution of water and glycerine may provide relief from dry mouth caused by benztropine.

  • Using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops can provide relief from dry eyes caused by the anticholinergic activity of benztropine.

  • Benztropine can make you sweat less. Avoid strenuous activity in hot weather and use of hot tubs and saunas while on this medicine.
