How To Use Betamethasone Dipropionate
Betamethasone dipropionate is for topical administration (direct application to the skin). Apply a thin film of betamethasone dipropionate topical cream or ointment or a few drops of the lotion form to the affected area twice daily or as directed by your healthcare provider. Rub the medicine in gently after application.
If you are using augmented betamethasone dipropionate cream, ointment, gel, or lotion, do not use more than 50 grams or 50 mL per week.
Betamethasone dipropionate spray (Sernivo brand) is for the treatment of mild to moderate plaque psoriasis. It should be applied to the affected area twice a day.
Do not wrap the treated area with a bandage or other occlusive dressing. This can increase the risk of side effects.
Do not allow the topical cream to get into your eyes or mouth. Do not swallow betamethasone dipropionate cream or other products. Avoid using topical corticosteroids in the genital or rectal areas or in skin creases such as the armpits without your doctor’s approval.
Follow the directions on your prescription label. Read the patient information leaflet provided with your medication carefully. Do not use more or less betamethasone dipropionate than directed.
Do not use topical corticosteroids for longer than advised by your doctor. Also, do not use betamethasone dipropionate on other parts of your body or to treat other skin conditions. Chronic corticosteroid therapy (using betamethasone dipropionate for prolonged periods) can lead to systemic absorption and serious symptoms, including systemic toxicity.
If your symptoms do not improve after 2 weeks of using the betamethasone dipropionate topical cream, ointment, gel, or lotion, call your doctor.
Missed dose: If you are using betamethasone dipropionate regularly and you forget to apply a dose, do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one and apply the next dose according to your regular schedule. Do not apply extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store betamethasone dipropionate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused betamethasone dipropionate should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw betamethasone dipropionate in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded betamethasone dipropionate is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
