Uses

Bumetanide Uses

Bumetanide is used to treat fluid retention (edema) caused by congestive heart failure, kidney disease including nephrotic syndrome, and liver disease.

There may be other uses of bumetanide, for example to treat high blood pressure—your pharmacist or health care professional can give you further drug information.

Bumetanide Mechanism of Action

Bumetanide works by helping the kidneys get rid of excess salt and water from the body through urine.

Bumetanide Doses

Bumetanide oral tablet comes in strengths of 0.5 mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg. Treatment consists of a total daily dose of bumetanide ranging between 0.5 mg and 2 mg taken in a single dose once daily. However, this medication has a quick onset and a short duration of action. Therefore, a second and third dose may be necessary at 4-5 hour intervals. The maximum total daily dose is 10 mg. An intermittent schedule of oral doses with alternate day dosing followed by a rest period of 1-2 days is also used and is considered a safer and more effective dosing schedule because bumetanide is a strong loop diuretic.
