Carbamazepine Side Effects

Possible side effects of carbamazepine are listed below. If these adverse effects are severe or still present after a few days, call your doctor for medical advice.

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Constipation
  • Problems with thinking 
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Uncontrolled shaking in any part of the body

Carbamazepine can also cause more serious side effects. Stop taking carbamazepine and call your doctor right away or seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

  • Severe skin rash with blistering or peeling skin 
  • Fever, muscle aches, joint aches, mouth sores, or red or swollen eyes
  • Confusion
  • Fast, slow, or pounding heartbeat
  • Swelling in the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, right-sided stomach pain, dark urine, yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Vision changes
  • Fatigue
  • New or worsening seizures

The above list may not include all the possible side effects of carbamazepine. Tell your health care professional if the side effects are unusual or severe or they do not get better over time. You can also report unusual side effects to the Food and Drug Administration at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Carbamazepine Overdose: In case of an overdose, seek immediate medical attention. Contact your doctor, your local poison control center, or the national poison control center on 1-800-222-1222. If a person has trouble breathing, cannot be awakened, or has had a seizure, call 911. Symptoms of carbamazepine overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, rapid or pounding heartbeat, slowed breathing, vision changes, difficulty urinating, restlessness, abnormal movements, twitching, seizures, and unconsciousness.
