Cefpodoxime Tips from Pharmacists

  • You should take cefpodoxime tablets with food. You can take the suspension form with or without food.

  • Finish the prescribed course of cefpodoxime treatment even if your symptoms are better. Skipping doses or stopping treatment too soon can cause your infection to come back and make future infections harder to treat.

  • Keep all your medical and lab appointments. Your doctor may want to order certain medical tests to see if your infection has cleared.

  • An antibiotic treats infections caused by bacteria only. Do not take antibiotics for viral infections such as the flu and common cold. This can result in undesirable effects, such as antibiotic resistance.

  • Tell your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth or vaginal discharge. Antibiotic treatment can increase your risk of oral thrush and vaginal yeast infections.

  • Seek emergency medical care if you develop watery or bloody diarrhea. This can occur up to 2 months or more after taking cefpodoxime.

  • Talk to your healthcare provider about taking a probiotic to lower the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. You will need to take the probiotic at least 2 hours after your cefpodoxime dose.

  • Give your doctor a complete list of all your medications. Cefpodoxime can interact with many common over-the-counter and prescription drugs.
