Cefpodoxime works by stopping bacteria from growing by preventing the formation of the bacterial cell wall.

Cefpodoxime Doses

Cefpodoxime comes in the form of oral tablets in strengths of 100 mg and 200 mg. It is also available as a liquid suspension in strengths of 50 mg/5 mL and 100 mg/5 mL.

The dose of cefpodoxime depends on the type of infection being treated and its severity. For example:

  • Pharyngitis and/or tonsillitis: 100 mg twice a day for 5-10 days.
  • Sinusitis: 200 mg twice a day for 10 days.
  • Community-acquired pneumonia: 200 mg twice a day for 14 days.
  • Bronchitis: 200 mg twice a day for 10 days.
  • Gonorrhea: 200 mg single dose.
  • Skin and skin structure infections: 400 mg twice a day for 7-14 days.
  • Urinary tract infection: 100 mg twice a day for 7 days.

Note: Dosage adjustment is not necessary in older adults. However, it may be necessary for people with reduced kidney function to take a lower dose.
