How To Use Clarithromycin
Clarithromycin comes in the form of a regular tablet, extended-release tablet, and oral suspension to take by mouth. The regular tablet and suspension can be taken with or without food every 8-12 hours (2-3 times a day). Clarithromycin extended release tablets are to be taken once a day with food. The treatment duration is usually 7-14 days depending on the type of infection being treated.
Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day. Do not split, crush, or chew the extended release tablet. Shake the oral liquid well before using.
Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Do not change the dose, dosing frequency, or treatment duration unless your doctor tells you to.
You should start to feel better after taking clarithromycin for a few days. Do not skip doses or stop taking the antibiotic until you finish the prescribed course, even if you feel better or your symptoms disappear. Tell your doctor if your symptoms get worse.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of clarithromycin, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store clarithromycin at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused clarithromycin suspension after 14 days.
Unused medicine: Unused and expired clarithromycin should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to it. Do not throw clarithromycin in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded clarithromycin is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
