Clarithromycin Tips from Pharmacists

  • You can take clarithromycin immediate release tablets and oral liquid with or without food, but taking them with food may cause less stomach upset.

  • You should take the extended release tablets with food. Swallow them whole without cutting, crushing, or chewing them.

  • Finish the prescribed course of treatment even if your symptoms disappear and you are feeling better. Skipping doses or stopping treatment too soon can cause your infection to come back and be harder to treat.

  • Seek emergency medical care if you develop watery or bloody diarrhea. This can occur up to 2 months or more after taking clarithromycin.

  • Give your doctor a complete list of all your medications. Clarithromycin can interact with many commonly prescribed drugs.
