How To Use Clotrimazole

Clotrimazole cream or liquid is applied to the skin twice a day, morning and evening, for 2-4 weeks to treat fungal infections. Wash and completely dry the infected area and apply a few drops or a thin layer of the medicine. If you are using clotrimazole for athlete’s foot, be sure to apply the medicine between the toes. 

Do not apply clotrimazole solution or cream on severely irritated or cracked skin. Do not allow clotrimazole solution or cream to get into your eyes. Topical clotrimazole will not treat a fungal skin infection of the scalp or nails.

Read the package instructions or prescription label carefully and use clotrimazole topical cream or liquid as directed. Do not use more or less of the medicine or use it more or less frequently than recommended on the package or by the prescribing physician. 

Remember that clotrimazole cream or liquid is for external use only. Do not swallow this medicine. Oral clotrimazole lozenges are available to treat oropharyngeal candidiasis (oral thrush). Clotrimazole vaginal cream is available to treat vaginal yeast infections. 

Get in touch with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after using over-the-counter clotrimazole for 2 weeks for jock itch or 4 weeks for ringworm or athlete’s foot.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose (forget to apply clotrimazole), do it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed dose and apply the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not apply more medicine to make up for a missed application.

Storage: Store clotrimazole at room temperature (between 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused clotrimazole should be disposed of so that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw clotrimazole cream or solution in the trash.
