How To Use Colesevelam (WelChol)
Colesevelam HCl comes in the form of a tablet or oral suspension to take by mouth once or twice daily. Try to take the medicine at around the same time every day.
Read the prescription label and package insert carefully. Take the medicine exactly as prescribed. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency without your healthcare provider’s approval.
Take colesevelam tablets with a meal and beverage. Due to their large size, the tablets should be swallowed whole, one at a time, with plenty of water or other liquids. Do not crush, cut, or chew the tablets.
To make the liquid medicine, stir the contents of one packet of colesevelam powder for oral suspension in one cup (8 ounces) of water, fruit juice, or a diet soft drink. The oral suspension will appear cloudy and the powder will not dissolve completely - this is normal. Do not eat the powder in dry form.
If you are taking colesevelam chewable bars, know that each bar is 80 calories.
Colesevelam works in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. It can help to control your condition but is not a cure. Continue treatment with colesevelam even if you feel well. Do not stop taking the medicine without consulting your doctor.
Missed dose: If you miss a dose of colesevelam, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take double or extra doses to make up for a missed dose.
Storage: Store colesevelam at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.
Unused medicine: Unused colesevelam should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw colesevelam in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded colesevelam is through a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
