Desloratadine Uses

Desloratadine is used for symptomatic treatment of perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis (year-round and seasonal allergies). It can help control symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, as well as non-nasal symptoms such as red and itchy eyes or watery eyes. Desloratadine is also used to treat chronic idiopathic urticaria or hives (red, itchy, raised areas) that occur for six weeks or longer due to unknown causes.

There may be other uses of desloratadine—your pharmacist or doctor can give you further drug information.

Desloratadine Mechanism of Action

Desloratadine works by blocking the effects of a substance called histamine in the body, which causes allergy symptoms.

Desloratadine Doses

Desloratadine comes in the form of a 5 mg film-coated tablet, 2.5 mg and 5 mg orally disintegrating tablets, and 0.5 mg/mL oral solution.

The recommended dosage of desloratadine in adults and children 12 years of age and older is 5 mg once a day for the treatment of chronic hives and allergic symptoms. The use and dosage of this medicine in children below 12 years of age will be determined by the child’s healthcare provider.
