How To Use Dexmethylphenidate

Dexmethylphenidate HCl comes in the form of a tablet or capsule to be taken by mouth 1-2 times a day. The tablet is taken twice a day with the doses at least 4 hours apart. You can take the tablet with or without food. The capsule is taken once daily in the morning, with or without food. The capsule works faster if you take it without food. Try to take your medicine at around the same time(s) every day. 

Make sure you swallow the capsule whole without biting, chewing, or cutting it. If you have trouble swallowing pills, you can open the capsule and sprinkle the contents on a small amount of applesauce. You should swallow this mixture immediately without chewing. Do not store the medicine and applesauce mix for later use. 

Read the prescription label carefully and follow the dosing instructions. Do not change the dose or dosing frequency of dexmethylphenidate unless your doctor tells you to.

Your provider may start you on a lower dose of dexmethylphenidate and increase the dose at weekly intervals based on your response. You should notice an improvement in your ADHD symptoms during the dose adjustment. If your symptoms get worse or do not improve after 1 month of dexmethylphenidate treatment, tell your healthcare provider. 

Dexmethylphenidate may control symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, but it will not cure the condition. Continue taking your medicine even if your symptoms are controlled. Do not stop dexmethylphenidate without talking to your healthcare provider. Stopping the medicine suddenly after taking it for a long time can cause withdrawal symptoms.

Your healthcare professional may stop treatment with dexmethylphenidate from time to time to see if you still need the medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of dexmethylphenidate, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed one.

Storage: Store dexmethylphenidate at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in its original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused dexmethylphenidate should be disposed of in a way that other people, children, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw dexmethylphenidate in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
