How should I take diazepam (Valium)?

Diazepam comes in the form of a tablet, oral solution, and concentrated liquid. It is usually taken 1 to 4 times a day and can be taken with or without food. 

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct diazepam dosage and frequency. Do not take more or less diazepam or take it more or less frequently than prescribed. Do not stop taking diazepam without talking to your healthcare professional first. Abruptly stopping diazepam can lead to severe withdrawal symptoms, including worsening anxiety symptoms, seizures, and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Your doctor will reduce your dose gradually.

Swallow diazepam tablets whole with a glass of water. If you take the oral solution or concentrated liquid, use the specially marked dropper to measure your dose. Before taking it, dilute the concentrated diazepam liquid in water, juice, or applesauce. Stir the mixture for a few seconds and consume it immediately. Do not store for later use.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of diazepam, take your medication as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store diazepam at room temperature (between 15-30 C or 59-86 F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any unneeded or expired diazepam. Do not flush the medication down the toilet. The best way to dispose of diazepam is through a medicine take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
