Diazepam (Valium) tips from pharmacists

  • Taking diazepam with certain other drugs such as opioid pain relievers (Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin) can be risky. It can cause problems with breathing and may even be life-threatening.

  • If you drink alcohol while on diazepam, it can make drowsiness worse. It is best to avoid alcohol while taking this medicine. Taking diazepam and drinking alcohol together increases your risk of serious adverse effects such as breathing problems.

  • Diazepam can cause dizziness and drowsiness as side effects. Be careful while driving or doing anything that requires focus until you know how this medicine affects you.

  • Diazepam is habit-forming and can lead to physical dependence. Take this medication exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. Do not suddenly stop taking diazepam - your doctor will reduce your dose slowly.
