Diclofenac Sodium Uses

Diclofenac sodium is an NSAID. It is used to treat acute and chronic pain caused by osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis. Diclofenac is also used for treating menstrual cramps and migraine headaches in adults.

There may be additional uses of diclofenac sodium. Besides diclofenac tablets, other dosage forms are also available such as a solution for intramuscular or intravenous injection, a gel for topical application, and suppositories for rectal administration. Diclofenac Sodium Mechanism of Action

Diclofenac sodium belongs to a group of medications called NSAIDs which work by blocking the body’s production of certain natural substances called prostaglandins which cause pain, inflammation, and fever.

Diclofenac Sodium Doses

Diclofenac sodium is available as 25 mg, 50 mg, and 75 mg immediate-release tablets and delayed-release tablets, and 100 mg extended-release tablets. The immediate-release and delayed-release diclofenac tablets are usually taken at a dose of 25 mg to 50 mg 2-4 times a day. The extended-release tablets are taken once a day. A total maximum dose of 100 mg to 150 mg a day of diclofenac sodium is prescribed to treat ankylosing spondylitis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Your doctor will prescribe the lowest dose possible for the shortest time to treat your symptoms.
