How To Use Diethylpropion HCl

Diethylpropion comes in the form of a tablet and extended-release tablet to take by mouth, 1-3 times a day, as prescribed.

If you are taking diethylpropion HCl ER tablets (extended-release tablets), swallow them whole. Do not cut, crush, or chew them.

Read the prescription label carefully and take diethylpropion exactly as instructed by your doctor. Most people are prescribed diethylpropion for short-term treatment (a few weeks).

Diethylpropion can be habit-forming. Do not increase the dose, dosing frequency, or duration of treatment without your doctor’s approval. Tell your doctor if the medication seems to be losing its effect.

Remember, this medication works best as an add-on to healthy lifestyle changes, such as a low-calorie diet and increased exercise.

Because this medication carries serious risks, treatment with diethylpropion will only be continued if you demonstrate satisfactory weight loss of at least 4 pounds within the first 4 weeks of treatment.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of diethylpropion, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store diethylpropion at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired diethylpropion should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw diethylpropion in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded diethylpropion is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal
