How To Use Diphenoxylate-Atropine

Diphenoxylate-atropine tablets and oral solution should be taken by mouth, usually four times a day, with or without food.

If you are using the liquid solution, use a medicine measuring device such as a syringe or dropper to measure the dose accurately. Do not use a household spoon.

Read the prescription label carefully and use diphenoxylate-atropine exactly as instructed. Do not use more or less of this medication or use it more or less frequently than advised by your doctor.

You should notice an improvement in your diarrhea symptoms within 48 hours of starting diphenoxylate-atropine. Following clinical improvement in your symptoms, your healthcare provider will likely decrease your dose of Lomotil therapy. If your symptoms do not improve after 10 days of treatment or you have worsening diarrhea, stop taking diphenoxylate-atropine and call your healthcare professional.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of diphenoxylate-atropine, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next scheduled dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store diphenoxylate-atropine at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container that it came in. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications carefully out of reach of children and pets. Discard any unused oral solution 90 days after opening the bottle.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired diphenoxylate-atropine should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw diphenoxylate-atropine in the trash or flush it down the toilet.
