How To Use Divalproex (Depakote ER)

Divalproex comes in the form of extended-release tablets, delayed-release tablets, capsules, sprinkle capsules, and a liquid solution. Depakote ER tablets are taken once a day by mouth. The other dosage forms (depakote delayed-release tablets, capsules, sprinkles, and liquid) are taken two or more times a day. Taking the medication with food can reduce gastrointestinal side effects. Try to take your medicine at around the same time every day.

Read the prescription label and patient information leaflet carefully and follow your doctor’s dosing instructions. Your doctor may start you on a lower dose of divalproex and increase the dose slowly. Do not change the dose or dosage frequency during Depakote ER treatment without talking to your doctor.

Swallow divalproex extended-release tablets (Depakote ER tablets), delayed-release tablets, and capsules whole. Do cut, crush, or chew these formulations. You can open the sprinkle capsules and sprinkle the medicine on some soft food like pudding or applesauce. You should swallow the mixture immediately without chewing the beads. If you are taking the liquid medicine, measure the dose with a dose-measuring cup or syringe and not a regular household spoon. Do not mix the liquid solution with fizzy drinks.

Note that divalproex sodium, valproic acid, and sodium valproate are similar medications that are used to treat seizures, but they are absorbed differently by the body. Do not substitute one for another or take them together. If you are making a switch, your healthcare provider will tell you how to do it.

Keep in mind that Depakote ER may help to control your seizures but will not cure your underlying seizure disorder. Keep all your healthcare appointments during Depakote ER treatment. The blood levels of this drug may need to be closely monitored, and the dose may need to be adjusted. Do not stop taking the medicine suddenly without talking to your doctor, even if your seizures are well controlled. Doing so can result in withdrawal symptoms, including severe, prolonged, and life-threatening seizures. If you want to switch to other seizure medications, your doctor will tell you how to lower your dose and make the switch. Call your doctor immediately if you notice any changes in behavior or mood or become pregnant while on this medicine.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of divalproex, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store divalproex at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in the original container, tightly closed. Do not store medications in the bathroom where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused divalproex should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw divalproex in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to properly discard expired or unneeded divalproex is through a drug take-back program or your local waste disposal company. Learn more about proper medication disposal
