Divalproex (Depakote ER) Tips from Pharmacists

  • Divalproex sodium, valproate sodium, and valproic acid are similar but should not be substituted for one another without a doctor’s guidance. Your doctor will tell you how to make the switch if needed.

  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking divalproex. Alcohol can make side effects like drowsiness and dizziness worse.

  • Do not stop taking divalproex without consulting your healthcare professional. Stopping this medication suddenly can lead to withdrawal symptoms and loss of seizure control.

  • Keep all your medical and lab appointments while on divalproex. Your doctor may want to order certain lab tests to monitor for liver problems. They may also measure drug levels in your blood and adjust the dose.

  • Tell your doctor if you develop any mental status changes, including suicidal thinking or behaviors, while on this antiepileptic drug.

  • Call your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while on divalproex.
