How To Use Dofetilide (Tikosyn)

Dofetilide comes in the form of a capsule to take by mouth twice a day. People with certain health conditions may be prescribed dofetilide once a day. 

Read the prescription label carefully and take dofetilide exactly as prescribed. Do not change the Tikosyn dose or dosage frequency without your doctor’s approval.

Your doctor will decide the initial dofetilide dose in the hospital. You’ll need to stay in the hospital for at least 3 days (6 doses) when first starting treatment with this medicine for irregular heart rhythm. Your healthcare team will monitor you regularly during this time to ensure you have a normal heart rhythm and no serious adverse effects.

Dofetilide can help to control your heart rhythm abnormality but will not cure the underlying condition. Continue treatment with dofetilide even if you feel well. Do not stop taking dofetilide without consulting your doctor.

Missed dose: If you miss a dose of dofetilide, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose according to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose or extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store dofetilide at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Do not store medications in the bathroom, where they can be exposed to moisture and heat. Keep all medications safely out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Unused or expired dofetilide should be disposed of in a way that children, other people, and pets cannot get to them. Do not throw dofetilide in the trash or flush it down the toilet. The best way to dispose of expired or unneeded dofetilide is through your local waste disposal company or a drug take-back program.
