How should I take Eliquis (apixaban)?

Eliquis comes in the form of a tablet to be taken by mouth with water. You can take Eliquis with or without food. If you have difficulty swallowing tablets, you can crush the Eliquis tablet and mix it with water or applesauce. Do not store this mixture - swallow it immediately after preparing it.

Follow the directions on your prescription label for the correct Eliquis dosage and frequency. Take your medication at around the same time every day. Do not take more or less than the prescribed dose or take the medicine more or less frequently than prescribed.

Continue taking Eliquis even if you feel well. Do not stop taking this medication without talking to your doctor. If you stop taking Eliquis too early, you will be at increased risk of stroke and blood clot formation. Be sure to refill your Eliquis prescription before running out, so you don’t miss any doses. If you want to come off Eliquis, talk to your doctor about taking an alternative anticoagulant (blood thinner) to reduce your heart attack and stroke risk.

Missed dose: If you forget to take a dose of Eliquis, take the medicine as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the regular time. Do not take an extra dose to make up for a missed dose.

Storage: Store Eliquis at room temperature (between 15-30° C or 59-86° F) away from moisture, heat, and direct light in a tightly closed container. Keep all medications out of reach of children and pets.

Unused medicine: Throw away any expired or unused Eliquis. Do not flush the medicine down the toilet. The best way to dispose of medicines is through a medication take-back program. Learn more about proper medication disposal.
